The 2025 Kia K4 will be an important model for Kia Australia when the all-new small car replaces the Cerato here early next year – in both sedan and hatch forms – but what if there was a third option coming?
Digital automotive artist Theottle has mocked up what a 2025 Kia K4 Sportswagon would look like, and the result is bloody enticing.
Using the roofline and C-pillar of the recently-revealed Kia EV3 small electric SUV, as opposed to the equivalent K4 hatch, Theottle has spliced together two of Kia’s most striking small cars and created a cool compact wagon with the same overall length and wheelbase as the K4 sedan.
That in turn is the key point of difference between the real-life K4 hatch and the rendered wagon you see here: the length.
Whereas the K4 hatch is short and squat behind the rear axle, the sedan and its digital spin-off have another 12 or so inches of bodywork hanging out behind the rear wheels – something that gives the small four-door some very distinct Stinger vibes in tandem with the rakish roofline.
Wagons were once all the rage in the small-car market, with extended five-door versions of the Hyundai i30, Ford Focus, Skoda Fabia, Volkswagen Golf, Holden Astra and Cruze, Peugeot 308, Toyota Corolla and Renault Megane all previously available.
Now, however, only the Peugeot is left and while the outbound Kia Cerato hatch is comfortably the biggest player in the mainstream small-car segment, it’s definitely more of a hatchback than a wagon.
The 2025 Kia K4 hatch and sedan will be offered with the choice of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol or 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine when they arrive in Australia next year, almost certainly followed by a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain that should continue to drive the front wheels.
An affordable small hybrid wagon could attract a loyal following Down Under – if Kia decides to build it.
