2025 Mazda BT-50 upgrades to a 2.2L

Gone is the 1.9; upgraded to a 2.2 and joined in the range by stop-start for the 3.0L

The News

Following on from this morning’s Isuzu announcement, Mazda Australia has released the pricing and spec details of its updated BT-50 line-up which has dispensed with the base 1.9-litre engine in favour of a new 2.2-litre unit offering stronger performance and better efficiency.

The Finer Details

As per the corresponding Isuzu D-Max, the 2025 Mazda BT-50 is now available with a new powertrain, the introduction of which has been used to mildly tweak the wider line-up.

The new mill offers an extra 10kW/50Nm over the 1.9-litre unit it replaces but supposedly shares the same basic architecture, albeit with a new head, block, pistons, con-rods, crankshaft, injection system and variable geometry turbo, not to mention an improved cooling system and ultra-low friction cylinders.

It’s paired exclusively with a new eight-speed automatic transmission and will supposedly consume between 6.3 and 7.1L/100km depending on the variant.

But where the old 1.9 was only offered as a 4x2 on the XS trim, the 2.2 is also available as a 4x4 and across multiple bodies: Single Cab Chassis, Dual Cab Pick-up, Dual Cab Chassis – see a full breakdown in the pricing table below.

Away from the powertrain, other changes to the BT-50 line-up include a stop-start system for the 3.0-litre variants (trimming the claimed fuel consumption by up to 0.9L/100km), alloy wheels for the XS Dual Cab Pick-ups (instead of steelies) and a tow bar for the XTR and GT Dual Cab Chassis 4x4s.

The Road Ahead

“The new Mazda BT-50 range will be available to purchase from October in dealerships nationwide,” Mazda said in a statement.

This timing aligns with the showroom debut of the near-identical Isuzu D-Max and its MU-X SUV sibling.
