2025 Omoda 9 arrives with power to spare

New Chinese PHEV SUV goes big on kilowatts, range and standard equipment

Chery has a new sub-brand coming to Australia known as Omoda, and its first model, the 2025 Omoda 9, is arriving next month to make life difficult for the BYD Sealion 6, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and MG HS Super Hybrid.

Priced from $61,990 plus on-road costs, the Omoda 9 will initially come in just one loaded ‘Virtue SHS’ guise packing 395kW of power and up to 169km of NEDC electric cruising range.

That immense power figure comes courtesy of a tri-motor plug-in hybrid system based around the Chery Group’s widely utilised 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and can launch the medium SUV from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds.

A full tank of petrol and a full charge of the 34kWh battery will supposedly yield a total fuel range of up to 1100km when driven appropriately, with the battery able to be recharged at 70kW when using DC power.

Standard equipment highlights of the solitary Virtue trim include automatic parking, a 360-degree camera, in-built dashcam, eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated steering wheel, dual 12.3-inch displays, heated and ventilated seats in both rows, a 14 speaker Sony sound system, sat-nav, smartphone mirroring, a head-up display, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate and 20-inch alloy wheels.
