Renault's small family of EVs has expanded to include the 2025 Renault 4 E-Tech van that dumps the rear seats and adopts a plastic rear tray to boost its carrying capacity to 1045 litres, although its maximum payload is limited to just 345kg.
The new battery-electric Renault 4 E-Tech-based cargo van is the spiritual successor to the original R4 that launched back in 1961 and went on to sell more than two million units in Europe alone.
Sadly, unlike the original, the new van misses out on both the raised roofline and the practical giraffe door used for long loads.
With the rear seats removed, the small cargo van gets a plastic load tray and new lashing hooks to tie down goods.
Options include a mesh bulkhead and measures to prevent the rear doors and windows from opening, plus an anti-slip mat and a privacy cover for the load bay.
Without the seats, the load carrying capacity of the small SUV is boosted to 1045 litres, plus an additional 55-litre space to store cables.
The load bay is said to measure in at 1200mm long, but payload is limited to 345kg – a long way off the 500kg+ other purpose-built vans offer.
In France, the 4 Van is offered with a 110kW e-motor and 52kWh battery, the latter providing a WLTP range of 409km.
Like the standard R4, DC charging is up to a rate of 100kW, with a 10-80 per cent charge taking 30 minutes.
While car EV demand slows, demand for battery-electric vans is surging globally although in Australia latest sales figures suggest that around 98 per cent of vans remain combustion powered.
Renault Australia has already declared that in the next two years it will offer six new models and updates, although details still remain scarce when it comes to both the Renault 4 E-Tech SUV and its cute Renault 5 E-Tech hatch's arrival.
