Renault’s new retro-styled electric hatchback, the 5 E-Tech Electric, is primed for an Australian introduction.
With design cues from the original 1972 Renault 5, Renault revealed the production version of the electric 5 in February, with pricing in Europe expected to start from around $41,000 (€25,000) and production to commence in mid-2025.
Speaking to carsales last week, Renault Australia general manager Glen Sealey said the 5 E-Tech Electric was firmly on the local radar, pending the overcoming of some potential ADR compliance issues.
“It’s under study right now,” he said.
“We have to overcome the rear bench and passenger airbag (ADR requirements) to make sure it’s worthwhile coming here.
“It’s a car we would love. We really want it”.
Sealey said there’s still a market for small hatchbacks like the 5 going forward, however sales aren’t expected to be huge.
“First of all, it will not be a massive seller, but it’s a great brand exercise,” he said.
“It replaces the hot hatch … will it be the fastest? No. But will it be a lot of fun? Absolutely.”
Two battery options will be offered in Europe: a smaller 40kWh pack with up to 300km of range, and a larger 52kWh version capable of up to 400km on a single charge.
Each pack could be paired with three levels of electric motor, comprise 70kW, 90kW and 110kW units.
The mid-range model is expected to sprint from zero to 100km/h in less than 8.0 seconds.
