2025 Subaru Crosstrek and Impreza crash in

The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek SUV and the related 2025 Subaru Impreza hatch have arrived on Aussie soil armed with an upgraded safety suite that’s already netted them five-star ANCAP safety ratings.

Headlining the MY25 upgrades is an expanded traffic sign recognition system that can now detect and display no entry, give way and stop signs instead of just speed limits, and an ‘emergency evacuation glass-breaking tool’ housed within the glovebox.

The extra kit does come at a cost though, $500 to be precise, meaning the Impreza now starts from $32,490 plus on-road costs and the Crosstrek from $35,990, however there have been no other changes.

Why it’s taken more than two years to crash test two of the market’s most recognisable models in unclear, but it clearly worked in Subaru’s favour seeing as it was the 2025 versions that were examined by ANCAP and awarded the five-star rating – all examples produced pre-April remain unrated.

Given the Crosstrek is essentially a high-riding Impreza, the two were tested in tandem and shared results across all major fields, though a few follow-up tests were required to confirm results.

Subaru’s smallest and most-affordable models netted category scores of 83 per cent for adult occupant protection, 91 per cent for child occupant protection and 73 per cent for their safety assists.

The two varied subtly on their vulnerable road user protection however, primarily due to “differences in bonnet and front bumper design” – the Crosstrek performed marginally better with a score of 85 per cent compared to the Impreza’s 84.

“The Impreza offered slightly better head and lower leg protection for pedestrians than the Crosstrek, however upper leg (femur) protection provided by the Crosstrek was superior to that of the Impreza resulting in a slightly higher vulnerable road user Protection score,” testers said.

Subaru was predictably thrilled with the results.

“For Subaru, safety is not just part of the package, it’s the foundation,” a spokesperson said.
