The 2025 Toyota Urban Cruiser has been unveiled and confirmed for Europe and the UK, potentially paving a way for an Australian introduction.
Joining the mid-sized bZ4X in Toyota’s European EV stable, the availability of right-hand drive opens the door to the Australian market where the Urban Cruiser would rival existing small electric SUVs like the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona Electric and the new Jeep Avenger.
Developed side-by-side with the recently revealed Suzuki eVitara, the new battery-electric Toyota will be built with its twin in India, with both riding on the Suzuki Heartect-e platform that also underpins the Swift hatch.
In Europe there's the choice of two battery options: 49kWh and 61kWh. A range for the most efficient version has not been released yet, but expect the Urban Cruiser to be able to cover up to 400km with the biggest battery and DC fast-charged at up to 150kW.
The smallest battery is combined with a front-mounted e-motor that produces 105kW/189Nm while the bigger power pack is offered with either a 128kW/189Nm single-motor set-up or a dual-motor system that kicks out 135kW/300Nm and provide for all-wheel drive.
Speaking of all-wheel drive, Toyota says it will equip the Urban Cruise with downhill assist control and a trail mode that boosts traction in slippery conditions.
Front-wheel drive models will also come with a snow-mode that cuts wheelspin in sub-zero temperatures.
All versions will come with an energy-saving heat-pump as standard, plus manually operated pre-heating for the battery in cold climates and Toyota’s latest driver assist tech.
Headline equipment meantime includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, cloud-based sat-nav and connected services while higher grades nab a premium JBL sound system and a panoramic roof.
Pricing for Europe will be released next year but we expect it to cost from around $40,000 if it’s greenlit for Australia, pitching it upstream of the hybrid-powered Yaris Cross.
