The 2026 Yangwang U9 Track Edition has set a new world record as the fastest electric car after BYD’s advanced battery-powered hypercar was clocked at an incredible 472.41km/h at Germany’s Papenburg proving ground.
Overtaking the 391.94km/h record set by the standard Yangwang U9 last November, the new record is a 20.53 per cent increase on the 2024 speed.
Approaching the 300mph benchmark, the U9 Track Edition closes the gap between all-electric and regular petrol-fed hypercars like the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut that is claimed to be capable of 531km/h.
Helping it go faster than any EV previously, the U9 Track Edition comes with four e-motors that produce up to 555kW each.
Combined, Yangwang claims its most extreme hypercar to date produces 2220kW – more than double that of the standard 960kW U9.
Featuring largely the same smooth looks as the regular version, the Track Edition adds new 20-inch alloy wheels, a carbon-fibre roof, a fixed carbon-fibre rear wing and a new diffuser with adjustable blades.
Optional parts include a revised front splitter and an electronically-adjustable rear wing, which is thought to feature a low-drag position for the top speed.
While the kerb weight is claimed at 2480kg, the total vehicle mass is said to be a portly 2630kg.
Powering the motors is an 80kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack claimed to offer a range of up to 450km on the Chinese CLTC test cycle.
Capable of being charged at up to 500kW, a 30 to 80 per cent top-up takes just 10 minutes.
The U9 Track Edition keeps the regular U9’s dancing active DiSus-X intelligent body control adaptive suspension which remains capable of three-wheel driving.
Yangwang could land in Australia before the end of this year and eventually offer its Range Rover-rivalling U8 – albeit badged as a Denza – with the full-size SUV already snapped testing in Northern Territory and South Australia.
Even though most of Yangwang’s sales will come from oversized 300 Series rival, we wouldn’t be surprised if a handful of the U9s arrived to help spearhead the brand’s establishment.
Before then, expect the Yangwang U9 Track Edition to set a new Nurburgring lap record, further cementing its performance credentials that could soon see an EV outpace combustion cars for top speed.
