The Finer Details

Due in showrooms sometime after mid-year, the new RS5 is being offered in two forms: sedan and Avant, with the latter carrying a $3000 premium over the four-door.

Powering both versions is a 470kW/825Nm plug-in hybrid powertrain comprising a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine, one electric motor and a 25.9kWh battery, with power distributed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The decent-sized battery provides up to 78km of electric range (sedan) while the engine and motor combine to dispatch 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.6 seconds.

Combined fuel consumption is rated at 3.8L/100km for the sedan and 3.9L for the Avant.

Being a halo RS model means the brutal performance is backed by an equipment list long enough to wrap the vehicle in, so not to crash out server, we’ll focus primarily on the highlights.

Included as standard on both the sedan and Avant is adaptive RS suspension, 21-inch forged alloys, Matrix LED headlights, power-adjustable, ventilated, heated and massaging RS sport front seats with memory function for the driver, heated outer rear seats, a panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency, power-adjustable steering column and three-zone climate control.

Infotainment and digital integration are handled through an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, with help from a head-up display and a dedicated front passenger display.

Tunes and podcasts play through a Bang & Olufsen 3D premium sound system, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keep you connected.

The Road Ahead

The first customer cars will arrive Down Under sometime in the second half of 2026 as Audi continues the gradual electrification of its RS portfolio.

Odds are the next-gen RS6 will also adopt plug-in hybrid technology, likely pairing the RS5’s electric-drive hardware with the current model’s bombastic twin-turbo V8.
