2026 GWM Cannon Hi4-T PHEV gunning for BYD Shark

GWM Australia has finally detailed its inbound Cannon Hi4-T PHEV, with the electrified ute set to pack a 310kW/750Nm punch and offer an electric range of up to 115km (NEDC) – contributing to the claimed 1037km total fuel range.

GWM’s latest PHEV ute has a claimed average fuel consumption is 2.4L/100km, with the hybrid system sustained by a 33.1kWh battery which should be able to accept 50kW DC fast charging.

Pricing and equipment details will be announced closer to launch, however it probably comes as no surprise to read the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV features the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol-electric powertrain as the bigger Cannon Alpha and Tank 300 PHEVs, albeit with an extra 10kW of power.

Like its stablemates, it retains a mechanical 4x4 system with low-range (and a rear differential lock) and will retain its spare wheel under the tub as per the diesel versions.

The PHEV will be able to be spotted by its black exterior trim treatment and red brake calipers.

Vehicle-to-load (V2L) and a 3500kg braked towing capacity mean the electrified Cannon gives next to nothing away to its bigger sibling, however we’re yet to see or hear of an official payload – odds are it’s better than the Cannon Alpha’s measly 685kg.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see two versions of the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV offered from launch, covering the same Lux and Ultra grades as the aforementioned Cannon Alpha and Tank 300.

The first demonstrators are expected start arriving in local showrooms within the next month or so, meaning a pricing announcement should only be a matter of weeks away.

“When local pricing is confirmed, the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV will become one of Australia’s most affordable plug-in hybrid utes, lowering the barrier to electrified ute ownership without compromising capability, performance or practicality,” GWM said in a statement – all of which points to a drive-away starting price in the low-$50,000s.
