Chery’s design-oriented sub-brand, Lepas, will launch its first model Down Under in the fourth quarter of this year, with the vehicle in question unsurprisingly being an electric medium SUV.

Intended as a rival for the BYD Atto 3, the L6 will sit at the smaller end of the medium SUV segment – compared to the Tesla Model Y at the larger end – and should debut here with impressively competitive pricing.
The L6 is underpinned by Chery’s new-generation LEX platform, meaning it doesn’t have a direct donor already offered in our market, though the plug-in hybrid versions offered in China have a lot in common with the Chery Tiggo 7 SHS.
A front-mounted electric motor outputs 160kW/275Nm and draws current from a 67.1kWh lithium iron battery pack that provides roughly 450km of range.
Back when Lepas’ local introduction was announced, Chery said it would be targeting a younger and edgier audience than Chery, Jaecoo and Omoda.

In today’s L6 announcement, company executives said the model had been “developed with a strong focus on design, intelligent connectivity and refined driving comfort” for “lifestyle-focused buyers”.
A panoramic glass roof and matrix LED headlights have been confirmed thus far, though it’s unlikely these features will be offered on the base model which should start somewhere around the $40,000 mark.
