The next-generation 2026 Mazda CX-5 medium SUV has been imagined ahead of its global debut and in the wake of disguised prototypes being spotted testing in the US recently.
Shown in both the spy and speculative imagery to closely resemble the current model, it seems the second-gen CX-5 will bear quite a resemblance to the current model, so much so it could even retain the current platform.
Its overall stature is very close to its predecessor while the front apron seemingly takes inspiration from the latest BT-50 workhorse.
The rear is also very familiar save for the altered lines of the tail-lights; however the word is just about every body panel, including the fuel filler cap, will be new.
It seems then Mazda will adopt the popular but not entirely truthful practise of labelling an updated model as a ‘new generation’ – good thing the next CX-5 will feature next-generation powertrains then!
The expectation is for the new model to launch with the familiar Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X engines as well as a new in-house-developed hybrid system before rolling out the more advanced Skyactiv-Z engine family in 2027.
Said mills have been developed to comply with EU7 emissions regulations and use the lambda one combustion method that forbids car-makers to enrich the fuel mix, sticking to an air-fuel ratio of 1.0.
This means all the fuel is burnt without any spikes in emissions.
Mazda claims the significantly reduced emissions will be accompanied by improved performance and power levels – the holy grail of modern engine development.
Factor in the forthcoming hybrid technology and it’s clear the next CX-5 will be more than a match for the next-generation Toyota RAV4 which will likely share some key componentry and/or systems.
