The Finer Details

The new range comprises the GLS 450, GLS 450d, Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and the new Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680.

This is the second update of the third-generation GLS launched in 2019. The highlight is the arrival of the comprehensively updated Mercedes-Maybach GLS 680, which was unveiled globally overnight before being confirmed for Australia at $424,900 before on-road costs.

Replacing the previous Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, the new flagship brings a redesigned front end featuring an illuminated Maybach grille surround and ‘MAYBACH’ lettering and revised Digital Light headlamps with rose-gold detailing.

At the rear are redesigned tail-lights linked by a full-width trim panel, while new 23-inch forged alloy wheels feature self-levelling Mercedes-Benz centre caps that remain upright while the wheels rotate.

Inside, the Maybach receives Mercedes-Benz’s latest MB.OS operating system and MBUX Superscreen, together with new Nappa leather upholstery, additional trim choices, enhanced Burmester 3D surround sound, new massage functions – including calf massage for rear-seat passengers – and further improvements to cabin insulation designed to make the luxury SUV even quieter.

Power also rises courtesy of a revised mild hybrid twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 producing 450kW/850Nm. Mercedes has also revised the steering and suspension systems to further improve ride comfort and refinement.

The updated lineup also marks the return of the six-cylinder petrol GLS 450 to Australia, priced from $181,900 before on-road costs.

Powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, the GLS 450 outputs 280kW/560Nm, with Mercedes-Benz claiming improved response through a more powerful electric auxiliary compressor and revised engine internals.

The GLS 450d continues in the Australian range at $188,900; $200 less than its predecessor. Its turbocharged six-cylinder diesel now gains an electrically heated catalyst designed to improve emissions performance while retaining its 48-volt mild hybrid system.

The AMG GLS 63 remains the performance flagship, powered by a 450kW/850Nm twin-turbocharged V8, with pricing rising by $14,000 to $313,900 before on-road costs.

Across the range, Mercedes-Benz has introduced redesigned front and rear styling, an illuminated grille, new wheel designs, the latest MB.OS software, MBUX Superscreen featuring three integrated 12.3-inch displays beneath a single glass panel, upgraded MB.Drive driver assistance systems and additional standard equipment including seven seats across the GLS range.
