The News

MG Motor Australia has detailed its updated 2026 MG4, which arrives with a higher entry drive-away price point of $39,990 but brings a suite of tech upgrades, improved interior and enhanced performance to the Chinese brand’s electric hatchback range. Now offered in just two variants – MG4 Essence 64 and flagship dual-motor XPOWER – both are significantly cheaper (almost $10K for the XPOWER) than their respective predecessors.

The Key Details

  • Flagship XPOWER priced from $47,990 drive-away (down from $56K)
  • Essence 64 to deliver up to 452km driving range; 405km for XPOWER

  • Previous entry-level Excite 51kWh and 77kWh long range discontinued

The Finer Details

The announcement comes just days after MG detailed the more affordable MG4 Urban, which the updated MG4 will sell alongside in just two grades: base Essence 64 and top-spec XPOWER.

Headlining the upgrades is a revamped interior, adopting MG’s latest design language seen in the MG S5 and upcoming MG S6 electric SUVs.

Improved materials and finishes are paired with a more user-friendly layout, including a host of physical buttons and dials for key functions.

Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a six-way adjustable driver’s seat is standard on Essence grades, along with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a larger 12.8-inch central display with integrated apps including Spotify, YouTube, TikTok and Amazon Music.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a 360-degree camera.

Under the skin, the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Essence 64 pairs a 64kWh LFP battery with a 140kW/350Nm electric motor, which is 10kW down but a whopping 100Nm up compared to the outgoing model.

A higher claimed driving range of 452km is up compared to the outgoing model’s 435km claim, with MG quoting a 10-80 per cent fast charge time of 25 minutes.

The MG4 XPOWER meantime uses a 64kWh nickel cobalt manganese battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system producing a higher combined 320kW power output over the outgoing XPOWER’s 300kW.

Despite producing more power, MG claims an identical 0-100km/h sprint of 3.8 seconds for the updated XPOWER, while driving range has increased marginally, from a claimed 400km, to 405km.

Safety is covered by MG’s Pilot suite, which now includes a custom function allowing drivers to save preferred assistance settings.

The Road Ahead

The updated MG4 EV arrives alongside the newly introduced MG4 EV Urban, which serves as a more affordable entry point to the electric range.

Meanwhile, previously offered Excite trim grades have been discontinued, as have the options of 51kWh and 71kWh battery packs.

How much does the MG MG4 EV cost?
EV Urban 43kWh – $31,990
EV Urban 54kWh – TBC
Essence 64kWh – $39,990 (-$6000)
XPOWER – $47,990 (-$8000)
*Prices are drive-away
