Barely a fortnight after the Nissan Frontier made its global debut in China, unofficial renders of a wagon version have emerged online, pitching a hypothetical new plug-in hybrid rival for the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest.
Dubbed the 2026 Nissan Terra, the imagined off-roader would replace the current Navara-based model of the same name offered in southeast Asia, the Middle East and China as Nissan’s sub-Patrol 4x4 wagon, albeit with bigger global aspirations.
Nissan Australia has already confirmed it’s interested in the Frontier and so the notion of a wagon version will no doubt appeal to both executives and consumers alike, primarily due to the overwhelming popularity of models like the Prado, Everest, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
None of these vehicles are offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain however – the closest you can get at the time of writing is a self-charging hybrid in the GWM Tank 500, though a 635kW PHEV version is admittedly in the pipeline.
Execs from myriad brands have expressed their interest in and emphasised the importance of offering plug-in hybrid off-roaders and commercial vehicles, so there’s a reasonable chance the rendered Terra could come to fruition, especially if Ford has set about an Everest PHEV.
Sharing most of its exterior design and hypothetical running gear with the Frontier, the 2026 Nissan Terra is a macho-looking SUV with strong character lines, and imposing stance and a Prado-esque rear end.
Under the bonnet is/would be a 302kW/800Nm plug-in hybrid system comprising a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and an electric motor, however it’s thus far unclear how big the primary battery is – Nissan’s claiming a healthy 135km electric range for the Frontier though.
Headline off-road and utilitarian inclusions meantime comprise a mechanical 4x4 system with low-range, a locking rear differential, 700mm wading depth and 3500kg braked towing capacity.
