US electric car-maker Rivian has not only revealed its 2026 Rivian R2 mid-size SUV overnight – a long-awaited Tesla Model Y rival – but has also unveiled another two all-new models: the Rivian R3 small SUV and an R3X triple-motor performance version.
The Rivian R2 slots in below the full-size R1S SUV and is described as a “five-seat package optimised for big adventures and everyday use”.
Pricing is set to start from a targeted $US45,000 ($A67,984) when first deliveries commence in the first half of 2026.
The smaller Rivian R3 and R3X will follow the R2, built off the same new mid-size vehicle platform as the R2 and, importantly, Rivian says all three models “will be available internationally following their North American launch”.
That puts Rivian back in contention for an Australian launch, having gone quiet after making bold global expansion plans with the R1S and the R1T ute.
The company says the new platform “consolidates and eliminates parts, thanks to intelligent design, including the use of high-pressure die castings, a structural battery unit where the top of the pack also serves as the floor, and closure systems that dramatically reduce complexity”.
Rivian is claiming a high level of off-road capability for the R2, which could see it pitched against not only the top-selling Tesla Model Y, but electric 4x4 off-road wagons like the Jeep Wrangler Magneto.
One of its headline features is a retractable rear window that transforms the boot into a pseudo-tray for longer items.
Meanwhile, the new Rivian R3 has been created with more of an urban focus, but that’s not to say it won’t handle the rough stuff – just in a milder, higher-speed rally sort of way.
The three models’ shared platform also sees them share primary powertrain tech with two undisclosed battery capacities set to feature across the board, the larger one offering a cruising range of more than 480km.
DC fast-charging from 10-80 per cent is said to take less than 30 minutes while the most-powerful tri-motor set-up will dispatch 0-97km/h (60mph) in less than three seconds.
Single- and dual-motor systems will also be available, the former driving the rear wheels compared to the two- and three-motor units’ all-wheel drive.
“I have never been more excited to launch new products – R2 and R3 are distinctly Rivian in terms of performance, capability and usability, yet with pricing that makes them accessible to a lot of people,” said Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe.
“Our design and engineering teams are extremely focused on driving innovation into not only the product features but also our approach to manufacturing to achieve dramatically lower costs.
“I can’t wait to get these to customers.”
Reservations of R2 are now open to North American buyers for $US100 ahead of first deliveries in 2026.
