Smart is returning to its roots, having just debuted its new Concept #2 as a direct preview of an upcoming production supermini that’s hoped to offer close to 300km of range.

Designed entirely by the Mercedes-Benz global design team and sitting on Smart’s “all-new, self-developed” Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), the Concept #2 looks a bit like a second-gen ForTwo fell into a time machine headed to 2080.
The body is just 2792mm long, making it nearly a metre shorter than a Fiat 500e, and yet Smart “envisions an electric range of nearly 300km”.
DC fast charging is hoped to deliver a 10-80 per cent top-up in less than 20 minutes, vehicle-to-load (V2L) is included, and perhaps most appealing of all for city slickers, the turning circle is just 6.95 metres – vs 9.7m for the Fiat.

Unlike some other concepts which are shown years ahead of the actual product, Smart will debut the production #2 at the Paris motor show in October, pointing to an early 2027 European release.
It’s unclear if the #2 will be offered in Australia, but while unlikely, a local introduction can’t be totally ruled out.
