A new single-motor 2026 Tesla Model 3 Long Range claimed to be capable of covering an incredible 830km on a single charge is now available to order in China ahead of its expected introduction in Australia later this year.
While officially travelling far further than the 629km Model 3 Long Range AWD available Down Under and even further than the long-distance champ Mercedes CLA (792km), it's worth pointing out the new Model 3 Long Range had its range recorded on the notoriously lenient Chinese CLTC test cycle.
Under the stricter WLTP regime, expect it to cover around 700+ km.
A product information release from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed the electric sedan has switched to a new 78.4kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery (NMC) sourced from LG.
The 2025 Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive has already benefitted from one battery upgrade in Australia.
The new Model 3 Long Range bolts on a more powerful 225kW e-motor, in place of the current car's 194kW motor. Tesla claims its new Model 3 RWD can launch from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds.
That’s a considerable improvement over the 6.1 seconds it takes for the standard rear-wheel drive sedan, but some way off the much-brisker 4.4 seconds it takes the all-wheel drive Long Range version sold in Australia.
Top speed is listed at 200km/h.
As well as the new Model 3 Long Range, the latest Model 3 Performance has also had its CLTC range boosted from 623km to 647km – which equates to an increase of around four per cent.
Translated to a WLTP range estimate, that could result in a small bump on the 528km WLTP range of the fastest Model 3 sold in Australia.
In China the new Model 3 Long Range has been priced from 269,500 yuan ($A57,400) – a healthy discount on the $64,900 (plus on-roads) charged for the current Model 3 Long Range Down Under. The Rear-Wheel Drive is $54,900 plus on-road charges.
While still unconfirmed for Australia, it's thought since both the rear-drive Model 3 Long Range and Performance versions will come here. It helps they are made in the same Shanghai factory as the Model 3s already sold in Australia.
