The News
Toyota Motor Corporation chairman Akio Toyoda has confirmed the brand’s upcoming super-sports car will be known as the Toyota GR GT. The announcement was made in tandem with the reveal of the new signage at Fuji Speedway showcasing the model’s headlight design alongside the Lexus LFA and Toyota 2000GT.

The Finer Details
Toyoda-san featured as the main guest on a Toyota Times livestream yesterday announcing five new projects across the Toyota, Lexus, GR, Century and Daihatsu brands, one of which was the upcoming V8 coupe.
The long-serving executive revealed he’d named the model personally and that it would be unveiled towards the end of the year – December 5 to be exact, as confirmed by a freshly launched countdown on the Gazoo Racing website.
Said revelation was accompanied by a sound bite of the coupe’s V8 – tipped to be a twin-turbo hybrid – powertrain and the release of a teaser image showing its nose alongside the LFA and 2000GT’s.
Toyoda-san’s confirmation of the nameplate also validates carsales’ discovery of a local ‘GR GT’ trademark submission last year which first raised the possibility of a dual-pronged road car approach alongside the Lexus LFR, particularly in our market.
Until recently, it was thought the LFR would serve as the production version of the upcoming Toyota GR GT3 racer that’ll compete in the World Endurance Championship next year – neither Toyota or Lexus Australia was willing to discuss the topic due to a supposed lack of intel and the fact it relates to future product.
The Road Ahead
Now however it seems the LFR will evolve into something more, with what’s rumoured to be a twin-turbocharged V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain; compared to the plugless system destined for the GR GT.
Odds are the internal combustion elements will be the same, but the relevant e-motors will vary drastically in line with their differing rolls, i.e. genuine electric range (and more power) for the LFR in tandem with a much bigger battery.
Some of the answers will be revealed on December 5 when the GR GT debuts while the rest will come to light in 2026 when the LFR breaks cover.
