2026 Toyota HiLux BEV is cheaper than an LDV

Three-variant HiLux BEV line-up inbound with all-paw poise

The News

The 2026 Toyota HiLux BEV will enter showrooms by the end of June priced from $74,990 plus on-road costs, with three variants available from launch across the SR and SR5 trim levels.

The Key Details

  • 2026 Toyota HiLux BEV almost here
  • Range comprises SR double CC, SR double-cab PU and SR5 double-cab PU
  • Priced from $75K-$83K plus on-road costs
  • Dual-motor powertrain: 144kW/468Nm
  • NEDC range of 315km from a 59.2kWh battery

The Finer Details

All three variants are powered by the same dual-motor powertrain which draws current from a 59.2kWh battery good for an “estimated” NEDC range of up to 315km (268km WLTP) – far less than the cheaper KGM Musso EV (380km WLTP) as well as the dearer, two-wheel drive LDV eT60 (330km WLTP).

The two motors output a combined 144kW/468Nm – more than the LDV, less than the KGM – and mean the HiLux BEV has all-wheel drive (AWD) at its disposal, backed by Toyota’s ‘Multi-Terrain Select’ traction control system which offers six drive modes to suit the conditions at hand.

When the time comes to recharge, DC power (150kW) will get you a 10-80 per cent top-up in 30 minutes while 10kW three-phase AC charging can take the battery from 10-100 per cent in about 6hr 30min.

Standard equipment on the SR variants includes LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, fabric upholstery, all-weather floor mats, dual-zone climate control, connected services, keyless entry and start, 1500W vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital cockpit, four-speaker audio system, satnav, wireless smartphone projection and DAB+ digital.

The SR5 builds on this with LED foglamps and taillights, rear privacy glass, leather-accented upholstery, heated front seats with power adjustment for the driver, a heated steering wheel, carpeted floor, auto-dimming rearview mirror, an eight-speaker audio system and a wireless phone charger, plus heated and power-folding wing mirrors.

All HiLux BEVs ride on leaf spring rear suspension, feature disc brakes in all four corners and come with a full suite of Toyota Safety Sense active safety features: autonomous emergency braking (AEB), dynamic radar cruise control, lane trace assist, rear cross-traffic alert, road sign assist and automatic high beam, plus a panoramic view monitor, tyre pressure monitoring and eight SRS airbags.

The Road Ahead

While LDV and KGM may have beaten Toyota to the electric ute punch, the Japanese brand is the first of the legacy automakers and segment heavyweight to offer a zero-emission ute – Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Nissan and Ford are all yet join the party Down Under.

The brand is expecting to shift roughly 500 HiLux BEVs in 2026, the bulk of them predictably coming from mining and government fleet sales, however private buyers purchasing or financing through a novated lease will receive a complimentary 7kW AC wallbox charger (not including installation) to sweeten the deal.

Three colours are being offered: Glacier White, Frosted White and Ash Slate.

How much does the 2026 Toyota HiLux BEV cost?
SR double cab-chassis – $74,990
SR double-cab pick-up – $76,490
SR5 double-cab pick-up – $82,990
* Prices exclude on-road costs
