Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV said to combine premium features, advanced driver assistance tech and practical packaging at an accessible price point. Now available in parts of Europe, the zero-emission T-Cross counterpart is yet to be locked in locally.

Now on sale in Germany from the equivalent of approximately $A50,000 (pricing starts from €27,995), the new ID. Cross is available in three front-wheel drive grades – Trend, Life and Style – and the choice of two battery pack sizes.
Reserved for Life and Style variants – which top out at around $A65K (€36,525) – is the larger 52kWh battery pack and highest output 155kW e-motor (a 99kW version is also available).
The base Trend meantime delivers 85kW and gets a smaller 37kWh battery. AC charging is rated at up to 11kW, while maximum 90kW DC fast charging allows the smaller battery to recharge from 10 to 80 per cent in a claimed 23 minutes.
The larger 52kWh battery supports charging speeds of up to 105kW, completing the same charge in approximately 24 minutes.
Underpinned by Volkswagen’s dedicated MEB+ electric architecture, the SUV measures 4153mm long, 1794mm wide and 1581mm tall, and comes with a 475-litre boot and 25L front trunk.
A 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster is standard, as is a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, the former of which gets a retro display mode said to recreate the instrument layout of the original Mk1 Golf, complete with analogue-style gauges adapted to display EV-specific info.

Other tech includes Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition, one-pedal driving, a 360-degree camera system, Park Assist Pro with smartphone-controlled remote parking and adaptive DCC suspension on flagship 155kW variants.
Although VW in now taking orders for top-spec versions in Germany – entry-level Trend will go on sale later – it’s unclear whether the small SUV will reach Oz, with a spokesperson for Volkswagen Australia telling carsales it’s currently being assessed.
“The Volkswagen ID. Cross is currently being assessed for the Australian market as part of our ongoing product planning activities.
“While we recognise the interest in the vehicle, we are unable to confirm local availability or timing at this stage.”
