The 2026 Volvo EX60 has been teased again ahead of its official launch on 21 January 2026, with the Swede's answer to the BMW iX3 or Mercedes GLC EV that arrives based on an all-new platform that will unlock faster charging and a claimed range of more than 700km.
To build the anticipation for the 2026 Volvo EX60's debut, the Swedish firm has previewed the side profile of its inbound mid-size electric SUV.
Looking like a shrunken take on its flagship EX90 large SUV, the new EX60 will be built in Sweden at the Geely-owned brand's Torslanda plant in Gothenburg.
When it lands, expect a pair of narrow front headlamps that will feature its trademark Thor's Hammer graphic, while earlier teasers have revealed smooth surfacing and sharply creased fenders.
At the rear, expect to see some upside-down hockey stick LED taillamp graphics that are combined with upper elements embedded in the rear screen, while VOLVO lettering is adorned across the rear tailgate.
The big news is the all-new EX60 will be the first Volvo to be based on its next-generation SPA3 architecture. Unrelated to any Geely platform, it will go on to underpin all future models made by the Swedish brand.
Claimed to be “groundbreaking”, the new platform will be used to unlock range, boost efficiency and allow Volvo to fit the hardware needed for its most advanced driverless tech.
Details of the EX60’s EV powertrain remain scarce, but it could come powered by the same 106kWh battery the ES90 sedan employs, with the most efficient versions tipped to be capable of covering more than 700km on a charge.
A smaller 92kWh power pack should also be available to provide up to 600km of range.
Thanks to the new platform's 800-volt electrics, the large battery will be capable of being topped up at a rate of 350kW with up to 300km of range added in just 10 minutes, with a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking around 20 minutes.
The first Volvo to feature its next-gen new multi-adaptive safety belt, that adapts to your height, weight and body shape, the Volvo EX60 is expected to raise the bar for safety in the mid-size SUV class.
Not confirmed is whether the new mid-size SUV will come with the same advanced long-range LiDAR as the EX90 that enhances its driver assist tech.
Expect yet more teasers in the build-up to the 2026 Volvo EX60’s launch in January 2026, with a local debut Down Under expected in the second half of next year or early on in 2027.
When the 2026 Volvo EX60 arrives in Australia around the second half of next year, expect the battery-powered mid-size SUV to be priced from around $90,000 (plus on-roads), providing a direct rival for the inbound BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC With EQ Technology, as well as the existing Audi Q6 e-tron and some Porsche Macan Electric models.
Thanks to its new platform, the EX60 should come with all the tech it needs to make a sales impression Down Under, with the Swedish brand quietly predicting it will instantly become its best-selling global EV.
Once launched, the EX60 will be followed shortly after by a mid-size sedan (ES60) and a wagon (EV60), although both of those remain uncertain for the Australian market.
The SPA3 platform, meanwhile, is completely scalable and will underpin all future Volvos, with the Swede brand saying it will no longer share architectures with its parent, Geely.
