The Volvo EX90 has received massive updates for the 2026 model year, upgrades that ramp up charging speeds, enhance safety, improve performance and should boost efficiency.
By adopting the 800-volt electrics, the 2026 Volvo EX90 tech jumps to the very top of its luxury EV class, with the Swedish-Chinese model’s DC fast-charging speeds increasing from 250kW to the same 350kW offered by other large three-row rivals like the Hyundai IONIQ 9.
Another benefit of the higher-powered electrics is a claimed increase in performance, although Volvo has yet to reveal full details of just how much quicker the MY26 EX90 is – the current 380kW flagship’s good for 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds.
The gains continue when it comes to processing power too: the new model will ditch the current NVIDIA Xavier chip for much faster and more powerful NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin processor as per the latest ES90 sedan.
Capable of 500 trillion operations per second, the EX90 can unlock the maximum potential of the Volvo's roof-mounted long range LiDAR sensor.
Thanks to the extra power, the AEB can detect and steer away from pedestrians and cyclists in the dark and come to a safe, controlled stop if it detects the driver having a medical emergency or simply asleep.
An added bonus is the auto parking has been enhanced, while in future the extra computing power will allow bigger over-the-air software updates to be rolled out, with Volvo scheduling four major software upgrades per year, alongside smaller updates.
Timings and full specifications will be released later with an expected price rise set to be introduced out in European regions.
Delivering such a huge update just months after its launch is almost unprecedented in the industry, but just shows how difficult the Volvo EX90 gestation has been with a car-maker grappling with new tech. It's clear the luxury SUV should have been launched with both the 800V electrics and its larger superbrain, but now it has both the luxury SUV will be one of the most appealing electric seven-seaters out there and a worthy flagship for the Swedish brand.
