2026 VW Polo is a light hatch with heaps of room

The 2026 Volkswagen ID. Polo has been revealed in full, debuting in Europe with up to 155kW of power and a maximum range of up to 454 km, however Australian plans are yet to be confirmed.

Measuring 4053mm long, 1816mm wide and 1530mm tall, the ID. Polo is marginally shorter but wider than the internal combustion Polo presently in showrooms, however the EV sits on a substantially longer 2600mm wheelbase.

It’s underpinned by the VW Group’s dedicated MEB+ platform and features single-motor, FWD powertrains across the board.

The 85kW and 99kW motors are paired with a 37kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that’s good for up to 329km of range and a 10-80 per cent DC (90kW max) top-up in 23 minutes.

The 155kW unit meantime is supported exclusively by a 52kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery that takes 24 minutes to go from 10-80 per cent under ideal conditions and provides the headline WLTP range.

Being a modern EV, it’s a given there’ll be a fair bit of tech for drivers and occupants to use and interact with: 10-inch digital cockpit, 13-inch infotainment system, smartphone mirroring, Travel Assist, one-pedal driving and vehicle-to-load.

Boot space is rated at 441 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1240 litres when the second row’s stowed.

The ID. Polo starts from €24,995 plus on-road costs in Germany and tops out at €33,795, converting to near enough $41,000 and $55,300 respectively.

Figures like that would place it firmly in the mainstream EV mix, however European pricing is rarely as straightforward as a direct conversion, so expect local asking prices to sit higher if and when it arrives in 2027.
