The first picture of the all-new 2028 Polestar 7 has been teased, with the Sino-Swedish brand announcing that it will be based on an all-new Volvo platform and be built at the Swede's new Slovakian plant.
Primed to be Polestar's European-made car, unlike the existing Polestar 2 and Polestar 4 that are built by Geely in China, the 2025 Polestar 5 and big Polestar 3 SUV are both built in the US alongside the Volvo EX90.
Predicted to be Polestar's best-selling model, the Polestar 7's new platform means it will benefit from weight-saving cell-to-body technology, with the premium mid-size Tesla Model Y rival to benefit from “next-generation battery density and performance”.
Polestar says that the Polestar 7 will also feature the brand's next-gen e-motors that have been developed in-house.
To share the cost of the new Polestar 7 it is currently being developed alongside the third-gen 2026 Volvo EX60, which will be based on the Volvo's all-new SPA3 platform that has been developed for EVs.
Despite borrowing plenty from the EX60, it's thought the Polestar 7 will be a little smaller but remain a size above the Polestar 2. Additionally, the entry-level EV will receive its own replacement.
Ensuring the two have their own distinct character, as well as featuring more radical styling, the Polestar 7 will feature its own chassis tune. The aim is to provide a sharper driving experience that’s designed to appeal to performance car enthusiasts.
While the SPA3 architecture will go on to underpin every new Volvo car from now on, it's not known if Polestar will switch to only using the new Volvo platform.
Polestar CEO, Michael Lohscheller, believes it’s the right move for the company when looking to the future.
“Our strategy of utilising Group architectures as the base for our future model line-up gives us access to the best, latest technologies, in a cost-efficient manner,” Lohscheller said.
The motivation to build a Polestar in Europe is driven by the fact a Slovakian-made vehicle avoids the recent tariffs employed by the European Union on Chinese-made cars.
