The first 2018 Honda Civic Type R with VIN number 01 has been sold for $US200,000 at an auction in the USA overnight.
The vehicle was auctioned by Honda with the proceeds donated to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
That incredible price makes it the world's most expensive stock standard Honda Civic Type R from the factory. Not that there's anything truly 'standard' about the new car, which is currently the Nurburgring lap record holder (FWD).
Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine – with added VTEC – that whips up 235kW and 400Nm, the UK-built Honda Civic Type R accelerates 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, has a top speed of 272km/h and has lapped the 21km Nurburgring track in 7:43.8.
It gets big 19-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes and, in the case of the US-spec '01' model, is finished in a bold blue hue, with black wheels and red pin striping.
The triple exhaust outlet and giant rear wing add a touch of tuner cool to proceedings.
The $US200K price, or $264,000 in local coin, is a whopping six times more than its recommended retail price in the USA ($33,900), and is indicative of the car's popularity globally, not just in Australia.
The 2018 Honda Civic Type R is first time Australians have been offered the 2.0-litre turbo VTEC engine and it's expected to be a sell-out success.
We’re driving the new car in Germany in early July so stay tuned for our thoughts on that one. Until then, we'll leave you with a review of the 2016 Honda Civic Type Review we undertook in the UK last year.
Honda has opened the order books for the Civic Type R Down Under before even confirming a price. Expect to pay around $50,000 – possibly a bit more – for the record-breaking hot hatch when it arrives Down Under in October 2017.
But if someone wants $264,000 for the Honda Civic Type R, make sure it's got the number one VIN plate!
