MG Motor UK has ripped the covers off the high-performance MG4 flagship – an all-electric hot hatch that will be known in most major markets as the 2023 MG4 XPOWER and has been confirmed to pack no less than 320kW of power and 600Nm of torque.
Making it the most powerful MG production vehicle to date, those big output numbers are provided by a dual-motor all-wheel drive battery-electric drivetrain comprising a 150kW front motor, 170kW rear motor and, according to the model’s Australian homologation data, a 64kWh battery.
And while they may be down 10kW on China’s equivalent MG Mulan Triumph Edition equivalent, they still yield a rapid 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint time.
The price for all this Chinese fury is £36,495 in the UK, which correlates to $A69,335 and, more importantly, marks a 12.3 per cent price increase over the equivalent single-motor MG4 variant, which in turn points to a local price of just $53,893 when the MG4 XPOWER arrives in Australia by the end of this year.
The Australian price tag is unlikely to be as low as that, however, and we expect the XPOWER will start somewhere in the mid-$60,000s, which would make it the pinnacle of the local MG4 range without straying too far from its budget roots.
Although it won’t be as cheap at the sub-$60K Cupra Born ‘hot’ hatch, a mid-$60K price tag would also mean the MG4 XPOWER’s nearest EV rival in terms of sheer power – the Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor – would cost at least $6000 more.
Included in whatever asking price MG Motor Australia eventually releases will be an all-new ‘Dynamic Cornering Control System’ comprising a locking centre differential, torque vectoring, stiffer suspension tune, beefier anti-roll bars, retuned steering, ventilated 345mm brake discs at all four corners and launch control.
The whole package will roll on exclusive 18-inch alloys shod with Bridgestone Turanza tyres, while the more powerful rear motor should instil the drive-experience with a rear-biased flavour, as reflected by the two-tone roof, orange ‘XPOWER’ brake callipers and optional ‘Racing Green’ colour option
The MG4 XPOWER will make its global public premiere at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed next Thursday (July 13).
