323i sedan to join Touring

BMW Australia has announced the addition of an entry-level six-cylinder to its 3 Series range.

Dubbed the 323i, the new sedan will be powered by the same detuned 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine with debuted under the bonnet of the 323i Touring. The wagon version of the 3 Series, the Touring was unveiled at the Melbourne motor show earlier this month.

Priced from $64,800 for the six-speed manual version, the 323i sedan will also be available in auto at $67,400. Its 2.5-litre engine produces a claimed 130kw -- well down on the $73,000 325i's 160kW peak.

Equipment levels appear comparable with the 'Executive' version of the four-cylinder 320i. According to BMW, standard equipment includes: leather steering wheel, Dakota leather upholstery, multi-function steering wheel, retractable front and rear centre armrests, front seat back storage nets, anti-dazzle interior rear view mirror, fine-wood trim in Burled Walnut, rain sensor and automatic headlights, automatic air conditioning, cruise control with brake function, Bluetooth mobile phone interface preparation and AM/FM radio with in-dash CD player.

Customers will also be able to specify an M Sport Package, featuring body kit, sports seats upgrade and 17-inch double-spoke alloys from $5200.
