330kW MG4 XPOWER to debut at Goodwood

High-performance electric hatchback will be revealed alongside a new MG performance prototype next month

After enduring years of belittling from purists over the apparent abandonment of its sports car heritage, MG Motor will come back all guns blazing with the debut of two new performance EVs at next month’s  Goodwood Festival of Speed, including the 330kW MG MG4 XPOWER that’s due in Australia by the end of this year.

The British-founded, Chinese-owned auto brand has announced three key performance vehicle debuts for Goodwood, including the first public appearance of the MG Cyberster roadster, which will take to the legendary British hill climb course.

In a statement issued overnight, MG said the Cyberster will be joined by “a dramatic British-designed and built prototype codenamed EX4” and a “sporting EV which will be available for sale later in the summer of 2023”.

This second ‘sporting’ EV will almost certainly be the global ‘XPOWER’ version of the MG4 Mulan Triumph Edition, which packs a 330kW/600Nm dual-motor electric powertrain that makes it capable of hitting 100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The monstrous powertrain is sustained by the same 64kWh lithium-ion battery as seen in other MG4 variants, yielding a claimed CLTC driving range of up to 460km.

MG Motor Australia is yet to formally confirm the hero MG4 for our market, but the model has already been approved for sale and homologated Down Under and our sources indicate the flagship MG4 should be in local showrooms by Christmas.

Pricing will almost certainly undercut similarly-powered offerings from Tesla, Kia and Volvo, and could even start from less than $70,000.

Virtually nothing is known about the so-called EX4 prototype at this stage, but odds are it will feature a dual-motor powertrain similar to the MG4 XPOWER and Cyberster, the latter of which is tipped to develop close to 400kW.

Even if the prototype is fitted with a single motor, outputs north of 230kW are very much on the cards given what will be available in the Cyberster.

Both the MG4 XPOWER and the EX4 will appear in the First Glance paddock alongside a stationary Cyberster, while a second roadster completes two runs of the hill climb course each day.

The 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed will run over July 13-16 and will also host the world debut of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N.
