35 years young: Golf GTi Edition 35
A limited edition Golf GTI has been released by Volkswagen to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original hot hatchVolkswagen Australia officially announced pricing and specification for the Golf GTI Edition 35 today. A very special version of the standard GTI, the Edition 35 boasts an extra 18kW of power under the bonnet, taking the total up to 173kW. The power hike ensures the limited edition model, released to commemorate the original GTI back in 1976, will reach 100km/h in 6.6 seconds from a standing start.
In addition to boosting the direct-injected turbo engine's power for the Edition 35 model, Volkswagen engineers fiddled with the exhaust system to provide the car with a sportier exhaust note. And driven gently, the Edition 35 still returns frugal fuel figures in combined-cycle testing — 8.3L/100km for the manual or 8.2L/100km with the DSG box. When it comes to bringing the car to a halt, the Edition 35 GTI can reach standstill from 100km/h in 35 metres.
Changes to the exterior of the car help distinguish the Edition 35 from the standard model, making the limited edition model even more collectable. Among the changes are a redesigned front bumper with outboard winglets at the base of the airdam. External mirror shells are finished in gloss black, the side sill extensions are body-coloured and the front quarter panels feature '35' badges.
Lighting comprises bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering facility and smoked LED tail lights; plus the rear registration plate mounting is also illuminated by LEDs. The rear windows are heavily tinted and the Edition 35 rides on 'Watkins Glen' 18-inch alloys shod with 225/40 R18 tyres. While the default finish for the five-spoke wheels is silver, they can be ordered at extra cost in a dark grey metallic finish. The spokes themselves are painted black and the rim is machine-polished. Exterior colours available include two opaque colours — "Candy White" and "Tornado Red" — "Carbon Steel Grey" (a metallic) and (pearlescent) "Deep Black".
Inside, the anniversary model comes with a 'golf ball'-look gear shift knob, new decorative trim strips, door sill plates featuring the '35' logo, red-striped seatbelts and the '35' logo embossed in the headrests, which are integral to the high-grade 'Jacky' sports seats. Buyers can specify the car with 'Vienna' leather upholstery (featuring active-breathing microfibres) in 'Titan Black' for the seat inserts. The '35' logo is also embossed on the rear seats and all seat upholstery is stitched together in 'Flash Red'. Red stitching is also used for the three-spoke steering wheel, handbrake lever, gearshift trim and borders of the floor mats.
Volkswagen is offering the Edition 35 in two variants, the manual, priced at $43,490, or the option of a car with the six-speed DSG transmission for $45,990.
