New South Wales Minister for Roads and Freight, Duncan Gay, earlier this month announced the speed limit in a major part of Sydney's Central Business District would drop to 40km/h.
That change, which took effect from the weekend, brings the busy area in line with other 40km/h zones already in place in the Sydney suburbs of Millers Point, Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Redfern, Chippendale, Rosebery, Leichardt, Erskineville, North Sydney, Chatswood and Parramatta.
The area in question stretches from Circular Quay in the north to Haymarket in the south, and Kent Street in the west to Castlereagh Street in the east. A widespread advertising campaign spanning road signs and newspaper and radio advertisements has been implemented to help spread word of the change.
Mr Gay said at the time the speed limit drop was being ushered in ahead of schedule.
"At the time we expected to have the change introduced by the busy Christmas period and I'm pleased we're ahead of schedule to get motorists ready well ahead of the peak shopping time when there are more people and families about," he said.
"Considering a vehicle that hits a pedestrian at 50km/h is twice as likely to cause a fatality as the same vehicle travelling at 40km/h, this speed limit change will deliver significant safety benefits."
