
Mercedes-Benz has announced details of its newest generation turbodiesel. Pumping out 500Nm in its top spec, you'd be forgiven for thinking the engine was a V6 or perhaps even a V8. In fact, it's a four-cylinder design that displaces less than 2.2-litres.
Set to be offered in C and E-Class models, as well as the new GLK, in 250 CDI, 220 CDI and 200 CDI variants, the new engine features twin sequential turbocharging and fourth-generation common-rail piezo fuel-injection technology. Architectural changes to the engine include a rear-mounted cam-drive (to lower the front of the engine, to improve pedestrian impact safety) and 'on-demand' lubrication and charging systems.
In its most powerful variant, the new four-cylinder turbodiesel is rated at 150kW/500Nm. This is a 25kW and 100Nm boost over the current 220 CDI powerplant yet Mercedes claims the engine "burns substantially less fuel than its predecessor".
In European testing in the current W204 C-Class body, the new engine returns a claimed 5.4L/100km -- a 0.5L/100km improvement over the current 220 CDI. Meantime, the new mid-level 220 variant of the engine (rated at the same 125kW/400Nm as the current engine) returns 5.1L/100km -- a 0.8L/100km boost.
Benz claims carbon dioxide emissions are down to 143 and 136g/km for the 250 and 200 -- reductions of 8 and 13 per cent respectively. The new engine is also cleaner in terms of NOx emissions and already meets the Euro V emission standards.
Designed to be used in its own right or coupled with inline two-mode hybrid infrastructure, the new engine will eventually find its way beyond the passenger car and SUV ranges into Benz's commercial offerings. Its high torque outputs should serve it well in this arena.
That's the good news. The bad news is there is currently no confirmed local release date for the new-generation powerplants. Benz sources Down Under say, at this stage, the current C 220 CDI soldier on in its current format for "the foreseeable future".
