Porsche is said to be considering the development of a limited production run of its 918 Spyder to compete in next year's Nurburgring 24-hour race -- news that hopefully signals a step toward fully-fledged production for the hybrid sports car.
With history proving the famous race is often used as a test bed for pre-production vehicles (think Lexus LFA), the story adds credence to rumours that the stunning concept could soon become a reality. The company has received expressions of interest already tallying 900, just shy of Porsche's business case trigger of 1000 prospective buyers.
A hybrid of sorts, the two-seat 918 Spyder will utilise the combination of a 425kW V8 petrol engine and an electric drive system to deliver claimed sub-four second 0-100km/h times.
If the 918 does make it to production, and indeed right-hand drive build, Australian buyers can expect a seven-figure price tag.
