A new dose of RUF tactics

Standard Porsche 911 Turbo too slow? Here's the answer...

RUF is arguably the most celebrated of Germany's many Porsche tweaking houses -- in fact, the Pfaffenhausen-based concern is recognised as a manufacturer in its own right by the German government.

And the company isn't in the habit of turning out fresh variants every six months, so when a new offering is wheeled out, it represents big news for Porschephiles and speed freaks.

Presenting the RUF Rt 12 S -- a steroidal take on the 911 Turbo, and the first new 997-based model offered by the company over the last five years.

Using the Porsche 911 Turbo as the starting point, the RUF labcoats have managed to up the ante to the point where the twin-turbo 3.6-litre flat-six cranks out 504kW and 880Nm, well up on the donor car's 353kW/620Nm, not to mention the GT2's 390kW/680Nm.

That said, it's not quite as bonkers as the Sportec SPR1 T80.

Disappointingly, the company hasn't revealed the exact technical nitty-gritty or performance details, but RUF says the car's aerodynamics have been honed to provide stability at speeds of up to 360km/h, so it's clearly not too sluggardly.

The styling makeover isn't as extreme as one might have imagined, with new wing mirrors, a large carbonfibre rear spoiler and a new rear bumper with sculpted air intakes being the key revisions.

There are also new LED daytime running lights at the front and LED indicators at the rear. In keeping with its high-po job description, the Rt 12 S rides on 19-inch alloys, behind which reside ceramic disc brakes.

Other standard features include a rollcage and high-adjustable hydraulic suspension (it enables the car to be raised by 50mm at the touch of a button to negotiate steep driveways).

The RUF Rt 12 S is offered with a choice of two seat designs and three trim options are available -- carbon, aluminium and varnish.

Pricing in Germany starts at €255,900 ($440k in our money) plus tax, and the car can be had in rear-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration.
