A9X Torana sale may top $1million

Bob Morris' 1979 championship winner goes to auction

A slice of local motorsport history goes under the hammer on 28 May with Mossgreen listing for auction the Holden Torana A9X which Bob Morris drove to victory in the 1979 Australian Touring Car Championship.

Mossgreen’s collectors’ car auction will be held at Carriageworks, Sydney from 4:00pm and the winning bid for the championship winning A9X, is expected to be in the region of $850,000-$1,050,000.

The car, purchased by its current owner in 1979 and last raced at Wanneroo Raceway (now Barbagallo Raceway), Perth in 1980, is still resplendent in its iconic blue/white/green colours and Ron Hodgson Racing/ASF Finance/Breville/Channel 7 livery.

Interest is expected to be high as the historically significant racer, which has been on display at the York Motor Museum in West Australia, has never previously been offered for auction.

Motorsport fans will recall Morris’ emotional 1979 championship victory. The Cronulla (Sydney) driver teamed with legendary team boss and engineer Peter Molloy to post the first privateer title win over the dominant works-supported Holden Dealer Team of Peter Brock and Harry Firth.

According to Mossgreen’s James Nicholls, the A9X is still in running order.

While the price expectation for the Bob Morris Torana is substantial, it will not be the most expensive car at the auction.

That honour goes to a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 which could fetch $1.5-$1.6million.
