According to the AAA, the unchecked pricing is adversely affecting family budgets and forcing households to stretch each dollar ever further.
“It’s deeply concerning that, this election campaign, politicians have ignored one of the major cost of living pressures for families in regional areas,” AAA Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said in a press release.
Steep prices in country towns have been attributed to high retail overheads and a lack of competition that is commonplace in built up areas. Additionally, rising prices over the last six years have seen residents of Darwin, remote sections of the Northern Territory, Perth, Hobart and rural areas in Western Australia and Tasmania as well as in Canberra pay the greatest premiums at the pump.
Mr McKellar said high marketed shopper docket schemes were not doing consumer’s wallets any justice and that the fuel pricing issue should be incorporated into political election campaigns.
“We are calling on the major parties in this election to say how they plan to address decreasing competition and rising fuel prices.”
The AAA wants the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to thoroughly investigate pricing issues and to be given the authority to impose competitive pricing amongst different fuel outlets.
