Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Australia has launched a website that presents basic specs and invites expressions of interest for its forthcoming Abarth 124 Spider.
No new information has been released ahead of the Mazda MX-5 based roadster's local release in October, but FCAA has confirmed it will be powered by a four-cylinder 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine delivering 125kW and 250Nm.
That means the Abarth-tuned convertible – the only version of the 124 Spider to be sold in Australia -- will offer more performance than Mazda's higher-output (118kW/200Nm) 2.0-litre MX-5.
Fiat says its newest Abarth, which has the same 385mm centre of gravity and 50/50 weight distribution as the MX-5, will hit 100km/h in 6.8 seconds on its way to a 230km/h to speed, thanks to a 6.2kg/hp weight-to-power ratio.
Like the MX-5, the 1060kg two-seat roadster will come with a mechanical limited-slip rear differential, Sport drive-mode selector and the option of both six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
An Australian model configurator is not yet available, as it is in the UK, but FCAA says a number of performance and cosmetic accessories will be available, including a dual-mode Record Monza exhaust.
In the UK, where the first 2500 examples sold will come with an individually numbered build plaque, the compact rear-drive roadster is also available with four-piston Brembo front brake callipers and a red tacho.
FCAA says further details will be available until closer to the 124 Spider's Australian launch in the fourth quarter of this year.
However, motoring.com.au understands first deliveries could take place in September, priced from about $45,000.
