
Since the introduction of the original Prius in 1997, Toyota has built and sold over a million hybrid drivetrain vehicles -- the vast majority of those just within the last four years.
As of the end of May, the Japanese company could point to 1,047,000 units sold worldwide.
The second generation Prius (more here) was the turning point for Toyota, introduced as a replacement for the old NHW11 sedan in 2003.
Since then, Toyota has expanded its hybrid drive model range to include people movers, SUVs and Lexus luxury cars.
The American market has been quick to adopt the alternative drive system and Toyota has established two overseas plants to build hybrids, one in Kentucky.
Toyota estimates that the petrol/electric drive systems have reduced carbon dioxide emissions over the ten-year timespan by up to 3.5 million tons.
