AIMS: Benz lets fire with CLS Shooting Brake

More carrying capacity for the CLS with a wagon tail
Mercedes-Benz is going all out to make the Australian International Motor Show a hit with prestige buyers, unleashing its new CLS Shooting Brake in Sydney this week.
The particular variant of its "pioneering" body concept Benz will have on display at the Darling Harbour Convention Centre is the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake Edition 1. Just one of five to reach the Australian market, the Edition 1 is a limited batch of the Shooting Brake in CLS 63 AMG form, but replete with a performance enhancement worth an extra 24kW and 100Nm – taking the total to 410kW and 800Nm.
In common with the mainstream CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, Edition 1 runs a 5.5-litre biturbo V8 through AMG's Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission to the rear wheels. An option for the AMG models, the designo American Cherry wood veneer for the load compartment floor is a standard feature of the Edition 1.
Introducing the limited-run model to the press yesterday, Benz spokesman John Vasilj explained that the company had built  Edition 1 ahead of the mainstream AMG version, which remains some months away from local launch.
"We'll have five lucky customers that will take delivery of this Edition 1 CLS 63 AMG [Shooting Brake] at least three months prior to the official launch of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake next year," he said.
Edition 1 will thus be an exclusive variant, even by the standards of AMG cars, but the CLS Shooting Brake range will also consist of more affordable variants. From December the CLS Shooting Brake will arrive in Australia powered by the same 2.1-litre diesel four-cylinder engine already available in the E-Class, and developing 500Nm. This engine is also to be introduced at the same time in the CLS 250 CDI sedan – a new variant in the four-door range. In the base-grade CLS Shooting Brake the engine will return a fuel consumption figure of 5.5L/100km.
The CLS 250 CDI Shooting Brake features added equipment over the sedan (which Benz confusingly calls a coupe). These extras are: AMG Sports package (body kit with trapezoidal twin exhaust pipes), sports suspension, 19-inch AMG alloys, Easy-Pack powered tailgate and self-levelling rear suspension. Inside the car comes with other AMG accoutrements, including a three-spoke steering wheel, two-tone trim with black headlining and stainless steel sports pedals. Designed to seat five, the Shooting Brake delivers more rear-seat headroom than the CLS 'coupe' and folded flat, the 60/40 rear seat allows up to 1550 litres of luggage volume.
Mercedes-Benz will also offer the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY Shooting Brake, with a 370Nm petrol V6 and the Eco Stop-Start system that kills the engine while the car is idling at traffic lights. Standard features for this grade over the specification of the CLS 250 CDI Shooting Brake include Keyless-Go drive authorisation, digital radio (DAB+) and the Driver Assistance package, which bundles Pre-safe Brake with Active Lane Keeping and Blind Spot Assist.
Pricing will be disclosed by the importer closer to the car's retail launch.
