The Australian market is one of the strongest in the world, per capita, for Mercedes-AMG – the in-house performance tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz.
That's why the prestige importer has leased two stands at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney this week – one for the volume-selling Benzes and one for AMGs. It's also why the three pointed star has announced new option packs this month for the C-Class and E-Class models in the local product range. The new Sport packs dovetail with the AMG Sports Package Plus (for the C-Class) to provide a taste of AMG without the cost. AMG has been recruited to assist Mercedes-Benz in the development of the Sport edition packages for the C 250 Coupe and the C 250 CDI Coupe, as well as different variants in the E-Class range. The new pack for either of the C-Class coupes is priced at $8150 and builds on the AMG Sports Package Plus ($6350) that is available across the entire C-Class range – including sedans and wagons.
"The C 250 model is by far the most popular model we currently have on sale today in Australia," says Horst von Sanden, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars, Australia/Pacific. "Now we offer an option to customers who want a little bit more Sport from a C 250.”
Cars specified with the AMG Sports Package Plus ride on 18-inch AMG alloys in a seven-spoke design featuring bifurcated spokes. Tyres measure 225/40 R18 (front) and 255/35 R18 (rear). An AMG body kit – comprising revised front apron, side sills, rear apron and additional spoiler – and sports seats in black ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA are further highlights of the pack with the black upholstery complemented by contrasting red seat belts and red topstitching for the sports steering wheel, seats, door centre panels, door armrests, centre console and shift lever gaiter.
The Coupe models – C 250 Sport and C 250 CDI Sport – gain sports suspension, a faster sports steering system, upgraded brakes, sports exhaust with sound generator, more responsive engine mapping and recalibrated S and M modes for the transmission. In addition Benz is offering 'designo magno platinum', a matt paint finish that is unique to the C 250 Sport models.
For the E-Class Sport, the pack costs $2600 extra, but the importer claims the additional features would normally add a further $7000 sum to the purchase price of the vehicle. Sport models are based on either the Elegance or Avantgarde model lines and comprise an AMG body kit, sports suspension, cross-drilled front brake rotors and 19-inch alloy wheels in a five-spoke design.
