AIMS: Kia trots out Track'ster

Soul-based concept to put in an appearance in Sydney next week
Kia has announced the Track'ster concept will make its local debut at the Australian International Motor Show next week. A vehicle mooted to reach production – although not yet confirmed – the Track'ster could be Kia's answer to the Hyundai Veloster and the MINI Cooper, to name two potential rivals.
At the Paris motor show earlier this month, Kia designer Peter Schreyer told motoring.com.au that he harboured hopes the dramatically styled Track'ster would enter series production sooner rather than later. Bringing the car to Australia for the Sydney show seems to be another milestone along the road to production.
Kevin Hepworth, Kia Australia's National Public Relations Manager, confirmed the Track'ster concept, which was first unveiled at the Chicago motor show in February this year, would go on display in Sydney. But Mr Hepworth categorically denied the GT Concept would make its way here as well. That may be an indicator of the relative strength of the business case for one concept, as against the other.
The company's National Marketing Manager, Steve Watt, explained to motoring.com.au that the GT Concept is built on a radically chopped up Optima platform and would require longer development time to make a production reality. So we're more likely in the shorter term to see the Track'ster roll down a production line before Kia gets around to a production version of the GT Concept.
Track'ster's presence in Sydney doesn't end speculation that Kia will build a hot hatch version of the pro_cee'd and that car will come to Australia – along with the more prosaic cee'd Sportwagon.
