AIMS: Mad Max Interceptor goes global

A strong international following drives interest in a 21st century revival of Mad Max resulting in two outstanding Interceptor concepts

A competition held by Ford Australia and TopGear Australia magazine will be extended through July as readers race to vote for their favourite Mad Max Interceptor design. The pair of incredible concepts, both on display at this year's Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne, have reignited interest in George Miller's classic 1970s action movie, with almost 10,000 votes coming in from across the globe.

Crafted after-hours by Ford designers Nima Nourian and Simon Brook, the concept vehicles have proved an enormous success. They are a far cry from the original XB Falcon-coupe-based 'Interceptor' from the original film.

Ford Australia's Melbourne-based design director, Chris Svensson says he was impressed by the imagination displayed by his team.

"It has given our team a lot of scope to really extend their imaginations and come up with some exciting new ideas. The team has been able to get quite creative because the Mad Max car is not constrained by the normal design parameters," said Svensson.

The two 40 per cent-size clay models weigh roughly 130kg each and are finished to the highest possible level of detail, right down to minor trim highlights, technology and weaponry -- including Tasers. Other futuristic movie features include a titanium-lined body shell to interrupt police scanners and wheels with extendable spikes to shred enemy vehicles' tyres.

It's not known whether full-size Interceptors will be built. However, planning has commenced on the fourth instalment in the Mad Max series, tentatively called 'Fury Road'.
