AIMS: Micra starts big march for Nissan

Nissan is one of the busiest brands at this year's Australian International Motor Show. The red and white Sydney stand features the latest Micra, Navara, Pathfinder and the new Patrol.

Big news for Nissan's smallest car is the introduction of a super-efficient 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine in addition to the 1.5-litre four-cylinder model.

Starting price for the new five-door hatch is less than the outgoing K12 model, simply because the range now includes an entry-spec manual offering. Previously Nissan Australia ran its light car campaign with a single-spec, auto-only five-door Micra.

Now with three spec levels and auto or manual options, the Micra lineup starts at $12,990 for the five-speed manual 1.2-litre model or $14,990 with four-speed automatic transmission. The mid (ST-L) and higher (Ti) spec models are equipped with the 1.5-litre four-cylinder, for $14,990 and $16,990 respectively. Like the ST, add $2000 for the auto.

According to Nissan's figures, the 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, rated at 58kW/108Nm, uses 5.9L/100km if equipped with the manual or 6.5L/100km with automatic. The results have earned Nissan its first five-star Green Vehicle Guide rating.

The 75kW/142Nm torque four-cylinder engine wants 6.5L/100km with manual or 6.6L/100km with auto.

The latest Micra uses an all-new 'V' (for versatile) platform designed for extra efficiencies (fuel consumption and production) via weight savings and reduction in parts complexity, which in turn has reduced production costs. The platform follows the first shared B-segment platform used by the K12 Micra and Tiida, and the co-produced (Renault-Nissan Alliance) C-segment platform for Dualis, Megane and Koleos. The Alliance is aiming to reduce the number of platforms currently used to "about ten".

Australian-delivered Micras will be built in Thailand.

The Micra is well-equipped on the safety front, with standard-fit features including six airbags (side and curtain in addition to front passenger bags), brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, making the little runabout a standout in occupant protection, especially at its price point.

The previous offering locally was a one-spec affair but Nissan still sold over 20,000 K12 Micras since launch in 2007.

The new Nissan Micra is available from dealers next month.
