Opel MD Bill Mott announced today that the price of the Astra OPC will be $42,990 – a competitive figure that appears aimed at the heart of Volkswagen and its high-performance Golf models.
The 206kW/400Nm three-door Opel won't be seen on local roads for half a year, but the importer is already drumming up interest with the car's appearance on the stand at the Australian International Motor Show today.
Such a competitive price, one that places the Astra OPC head to head with the lower-powered Golf GTI five-door with DSG, will ensure the Opel finds its way onto the shopping list of GTI buyers – who amount to a significant proportion of Golf customers.
"This vehicle will be in showrooms as of March next year," Mr Mott told the media in Sydney. "But it goes on sale as of today. It is a vehicle that promises to truly shake up the high-performance segment – and that is also very much true when I tell you the price... This vehicle with all the standard equipment and features... will go on sale today for the price of $42,990.
Compare that with any of our competitors and I'm sure you'll find that the Astra OPC comes out on top. We believe – absolutely – that this car will establish new benchmarks – a benchmark for design, a benchmark for power and also a benchmark for value for money."
The standard features of the car designated for Australia include: mechanical limited-slip differential, high-performance front struts, Brembo brakes and 19-inch alloy wheels. Comfort and convenience features specified as standard are satellite navigation, Nappa leather seat trim and sports steering wheel/gear knob/headlining.
