AIMS: Safety on show in Sydney

ANCAP set to exhibit safety at the Australian International Motor Show

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) is geared up and ready for its first Australian International Motor Show.

The safety body will showcase a crash-tested Hyundai i45 (pictured) to demonstrate the results of a frontal offset test to show-goers.

The frontal offset test is used to simulate an accident in which two cars of equal mass collide with one another at the same speed. The offset is set at 40 per cent of the vehicle’s frontal area, biased towards the driver’s side. Rather than crash two vehicles, the donor vehicle impacts with a crushable barrier at a speed of 64km/h.

During the test, the car on display achieved what ANCAP says are “solid results”. In conjunction with the vehicle's extensive list of safety equipment, culminated in the Hyundai i45 being awarded a maximum possible five-star rating.

Experienced ANCAP technical staff will also be on hand to offer advice to prospective car buyers.  The safety body says it encourages consumers to “accept nothing less” than a five-star rated car when buying new. The ANCAP team will also show owners of current cars how to check the safety rating of their current vehicle via its website.

The 2012 Australian International Motor Show will be held in Syndey from October 18-22. More information and tickets are available from www.motorshow.com.au.
