Sydney is bracing itself for a bumper 2010 motor show, the Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) to kick off this Friday in Darling Harbour.
Showcasing some of the most significant new vehicles to be launched in this country, AIMS will host two major global premieres of locally developed vehicles from Ford and Mazda, the new T6 Ranger and BT-50 light commercial models. The motor show also showcases more than 40 vehicles making their debut in either Australia or the Southern Hemisphere.
Today, Sydneysiders got their first taste of the broad range of vehicles on offer at AIMS, with a display of three unique vehicles in Darling Harbour, including Mitsubishi's all-electric i-MiEV -- the first battery-electric vehicle offered by a major Australian brand and the first EV to join the Carsales Network fleet.
Also on display, New Zealand's hand-built Hulme CanAm supercar offers purists the chance to get up close to a pure-bred supercar which accelerates from 0-100km/h in less-than 3.5 seconds thanks to its 7.0-litre Chevrolet V8 engine.
Lastly, Renault's Megane Trophy, specially air-freighted from France for the event, heads a variety of race cars at AIMS. The mid-engined machine's sleek lines were developed using aerodynamic lessons learnt in Formula 1.
AIMS director Russ Tyrie believes the wide variety of vehicles on show, coupled with a large number of new models, means everyone will find something that appeals.
"The stage is set for one of the most significant motor shows of our time thanks to the breadth of new models that will be revealed this Friday," said Tyrie.
"Vehicles like Mitsubishi's i-MiEV point to where our industry is heading at a rapid rate. The new locally-developed models from Ford and Mazda show just how highly-regarded Australian input is to the rest of the world.
"It is also encouraging to see cars like the Hulme CanAm as they excite people and showcase the true heritage of the automobile."
The Australian International Motor Show runs from 15-24 October at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour.
