AIMS: XC70 goes for six
Volvo's all-new XC70 model comes with much-needed six-cylinder powerAustralia loved the original V70 Cross Country and most recently, the beefer, high-riding XC70 wagon. What we weren't sure of was the ability of the car's 2.5-litre petrol engine to cope with a family load.
What the XC70 really needed all along has been addressed with the all-new model, launched at AIMS and boasting the all-alloy 3.2-litre six from the S80.
The six should provide the sort of get up and go Aussies still enjoy. For the more frugal minded it's joined by the same five-cylinder turbodiesel that graces the XC90. Power and torque figures for the two engines are 175kW and 320Nm respectively for the six and 136kW and 400Nm for the diesel.
Both engines can be specified with a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed sequential-shift automatic. Expect local buyers to favour the auto versions by a margin.
Among the features and specifications to set the new car apart from the earlier generation XC70, there's more interior legroom and width, improved passive safety, enhanced drive systems with hill descent control and the option of a 'Clean Zone Interior Package' for allergy-sufferers.
