The good news is that Alfa Romeo’s oft-promised successor to the 8C sports tourer is still coming.
The bad news is that it’s going to take a while.
The next 8C will retain the name of the carbon-bodied two-seat V8, but it won’t be on sale until at least 2023.
Highlighted as part of the late Sergio Marchionne’s business plan for Alfa Romeo, the 8C will be a halo for the history and traditions of the brand, so it might run some hybrid tech but won’t follow the Maserati Alfieri down the battery-electric path.
Alfa sources are suggesting the flagship Alfa will deliver more than 450kW of power thanks to a hybrid version of the Ferrari-built twin-turbo V8.
Yet the halo model hasn’t been part of the three-year Plan Italy that new FCA boss Mike Manley has been negotiating over with Italian unions, which dates the 8C to late 2022 at the very earliest.
