Alfa Romeo reportedly developing 260kW Giulia

A new middling variant is set to join Italian marque's mid-size sedan range

Alfa Romeo is reportedly set to unleash a new warm variant of its Giulia sports sedan into showrooms.

Purportedly designed to sit between the unhinged Giulia QV and garden-variety Giulia models, the new variant -- which is yet to be confirmed -- was outed by a freelance journalist after he spotted the details on Fiat Chrysler's website.

If correct, the newcomer will develop 260kW from a familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, and will join the Giulia range that currently comprises the 147kW base petrol variants, the 206kW Veloce, the 132kW 2.1-litre turbo-diesel and 375kW 2.9-litre V6 turbo QV.

Reports suggest the tweaked powertrain will arrive in the form of an updated Giulia Veloce model.

Such a model would do direct battle with the likes of the 270kW Mercedes-AMG C43 and 260kW Audi S4, correlating with a circa $100,000 (plus ORCs) starting price and a sub-five-second 0-100km/h time.

Given Alfa Romeo’s bent for proliferating engines and model lines to increase performance and efficiency, don’t be surprised if the new turbo-four finds its way into the upcoming Stelvio SUV either.

A neat half-way point if there ever was one.
