Legendary design house Zagato has teased its next limited-edition project, which will see it design and craft a retro-inspired body for the 2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato.
Reportedly independent of Alfa Romeo’s previously detailed supercar project, the very name of the upcoming special denotes its genetic make-up and points us down a relatively safe path of speculation.
Being a spin-off of the Giulia, the bespoke sports model will almost certainly be underpinned by Alfa’s venerable rear-drive Giorgio platform and powered by the familiar but fearsome Quadrifoglio-spec twin-turbo 2.9-litre petrol V6.
The cryptic teaser was posted as a temporary story to Zagato’s Instagram page but was later pinned and highlighted at the top of the account, where a 14-second teaser clip shows off a full-width rear lighting signature styled in the image of the old Alfa Giulia Zagato TZ racers.
This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given the Zagato’s 2023 reveal will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the TZ’s motorsport debut at the FISA Monza Cup in 1963.
Given the original TZ was a jaw-dropping cab-back coupe and the new model feature ‘SWB’ in its name, it would be reasonable to expect the bespoke Giulia to break cover with only two doors and a smaller footprint compared to its high-performance sedan donor car.
Odds are the powertrain will be lifted straight out of the rabid Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, meaning this bespoke sports car should chuck out close to 400kW/600Nm and send drive to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
A limited-slip differential and improved kerb weight (over the 1580kg sedan) are both shoo-ins, as is an astronomical price tag on account of the Zagato’s low-volume exclusivity and the heritage-rich connection between it and the original racers.
Less than 100 examples are expected to be made in total, meaning wealthy collectors will need to be quick once order books are opened.
